Frequently Asked Questions

What does Capessa mean? Capessa is a derivative of the Latin word capesso, meaning to strive for or to reach. It's pronounced kah-pay-sah, as opposed to cap-essss-ah or kah-peez-ah. Now you know all our secrets.

When did Capessa start? Capessa began on the Yahoo web network on December 21, 2006. It was an historic day, although most of the historic day trackers have yet to add it to their listings. On Jan. 7, 2007, it debuted as its own site, although you can still find Capessa stories on Yahoo. The new site was built to support the demand for community that women were expressing to us. "The stories are great, but where can we TALK about them? Where can we find women like this to be friends with?" Okay, they didn't say exactly that, but that was the gist of it. We heard them loud and clear, and that is how it got where it is today.

How do you choose the stories you tell? Everyone is invited to tell their story on Capessa. The Capessa production team does travel around the country doing video stories with women, however. We find women through newspaper articles, newscasts, community organizations, conferences, and, perhaps most importantly, through other women. If you know someone who has a story to tell, let us know.

How is Capessa different from other women's websites? We like to think that Capessa is better than all the rest.

But, in case you haven't come to the same conclusion as us yet, what really sets us apart is that we rely on peer-to-peer conversation. Most women's media brings in experts for everything from eye shadow to breast cancer, and since experts are supposed to be experts they have to have an answer for everything. How many women have read a baby book from one expert that says, "Let them cry it out no matter what or you'll be cursed with a kid in your bed until they're 14 years old," and then picked up another that says, "Letting your infant cry it out is a form of torture and you will be a failure as a mother if your child so much as whimpers"? What works best is usually some secret we hear about in an unexpected circle of women. Go figure.

By bringing women together to share their own personal stories, Capessa is giving women a variety of "expert" advice, based on real experiences and real women.
